After leaving behind a job as a marine conservationist and scuba diving instructor in Australia in 2016 to follow her husband to Dubai, our Founder, Natalie Banks had a deep passion to continue her work within the United Arab Emirates. Not knowing anyone in the field within the region however, made it difficult to get in front of the eyes and ears of those who could place her in the role she desperately sought.

After four months of attempting to secure a position in marine conservation, she decided to repeat what she had previously achieved in Australia, which was to start an organisation from scratch. After nine months and with the guidance of the Community Development Authority, Natalie formed the required board, developed Azraq's constitution and had all the necessary documents registered in the courts to finally receive an operational permit.

The word Azraq gives credence to the mother tongue within the United Arab Emirates; being the Arabic word for "Blue" and it defines the marine environment that Azraq serves to conserve and protect. Azraq's mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect the marine ecosystem and species. Azraq aims to achieve this mission by undertaking activities that EDUCATE through awareness programs and community presentations, MOTIVATE the community to make a difference and ACTIVATE them by offering a range of activities on, in and around the ocean such as beach cleans and mangrove tree plantings. The organisation today has become a close-knit community focussed on being positive change makers in the UAE.
